What is a T1?

A T1 line is point-to-point connection between two locations. That is, service originates at one location and is directly connected to another location via a central telephone office. Each end of the line has a device called a CSU/DSU which converts a router's output into T1 frames. The router is connected to your internal network. The quality of service (QoS) is maintained throughout resulting in a higher cost to provide the service.

Burstable Service

For businesses that require the use of a full T1 or T3 only during certain busy times of the day, but don't need the full bandwidth the majority of the time, burstable service is an excellent option. It provides on-demand bandwidth with flexible pricing.

What is Frame Relay?

Frame relay is a burstable connection technology. A variable speed line is connected from your location back to a central office. A number of central offices are connected together to create a central frame cloud. Within the central frame cloud, there are a number of circuits that transfer traffic from the frame cloud to the Internet. Sometimes this option can be less expensive to deploy because the connection between your location and the frame cloud is shorter and therefore, less expensive than directly connecting to the Internet. Because you are connected to a frame cloud, you can take advantage of a higher pool of bandwidth.
